THE HONEST STORY
OUR STORY BEGINS…
…around the early 1990’s, in a wee village called “Gorthleck”. As a child, I was fascinated with the likes of Lego and Meccano. Later my parents must have realised my fascination with building things and understanding how they worked as I would often find myself helping them out with various projects around our house.
Skip forward a few years; and no more than a year after qualifying Aeronautical Engineering at Glasgow University. This fascination had not waned however I was starting to realise that academia was not the right route for me. Luckily, I was still quite young and decided to live a little and ended up traveling around taking on various labouring jobs from different builders around the UK.
This lead to a complete “U” turn in career choices and landed me in an estimating job in Yorkshire, after attending several courses in Bench Joinery & AutoCAD. It was at this point (sometime in my mid 20’s) I decided to give Engineering another shot. Although lasting a few years longer than the previous stint - this time at PERTH UHI, this route was was inevitably doomed to the same fate as the first time round. Not all was lost though as it was here I met Robert Floyd (co-founder of 2 PLANKS LTD).
We both worked on renovations, fitting bathrooms and kitchens during our studies until we became far more focused on our work; improving upon it; reiterating; and learning new skills and trades. Due to our ability to understand the whole project coupled with our attention to detail, we began to pick up several good customers… And so, it was decided after a late night at work in Fife to once again leave academia to start the company 2 PLANKS LTD, which was incorporated on Tuesday the 13th of September, 2016.
The mission statement for our company was, and always has been, to:
Never compromise on quality or workmanship;
To help our customers understand the value & often labour-saving aspect of using more expensive materials
Source locally & sustainably wherever possible
Heavily invest in premium tools & reiterate our practices regularly
Think out of the box and avoid following similar business models to other firms
Being able to focus everything into this company and being able to combine all our skills in one place is single-handily the best and most worth-while/rewarding thing I’ve ever done. This will hopefully help you understand how important your work is to us and - most importantly - give you a foundation for why you should choose us to commission any work in the first place. Unfortunately, due to relocating, Robert is no longer employed by 2 PLANKS LTD. However he is still a close friend, we still work together and discuss various projects on a regular basis.
